Breast Cancer Scandal At UMKC TMC

The 2011 UMKC Pathology Breast Cancer Scandal was a cover-up, of negligent cancer care in the Pathology Department at TMC-HH.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine (UMKC-SOM) is a medical school in Kansas City, Missouri, and is affilaited with the otherwise excellent, adjacent hospital known as Truman Medical Center-Hospital Hill (TMC-HH).

In 2011, the guidelines for breast cancer stated that breast lumpectomy specimens were to be placed within formalin within 60 miniutes. The reason for this is provide accurate estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (Her2) testing.

The following video relates to the cover-up at the UMKC Pathology Department, their lying to the  about months of breast cancer care. The prolonged ischemic time went ignored inspite of my reports to the Chair, an Attending, the other residents and even the University DIO. The Video is different than what UMKC did because the video described reports of false-positive Her2 receptor testing. Watch how the Mayo Clinic, leaders in healthcare help improve the unsafe and variable state of breast cancer testing.

The ER and PRs are at risk of testing as false-negative testing by Immunohistochemistry, when the ischemic time is prolonged.

The importance of accurate testing is highlighted by the following video, where specific treatments are used for the ER+, PR+ breast cancers.

The UMKC Pathology Department permitted a prolonged ishemic time from January to June 2011 and this occured in spite of being informed about the unsafe care. It wasn't until June 2014 that I discovered that the UMKC Graduate Medical Education (UMKC-School of Medicine, GME Office) had given false reports to the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education ACGME

    Breast Cancel Scandal

    Part II: The Lies

The lies were written by the UMKC-GME office to Amy Beane of the ACGME and the letter signed by the UMKC DIO. The date was in the latter half of 2011, and I, Doctor Brett Snodgrass, did not become aware of the disinformation until June of 2014.

    The Cancer Lies

Disinformation that UMKC wrote to the ACGME

    1. We always have an ischemic time of less than 30 minutes.

    2. The Pathology Department "often[sic]" documents the ischemic time.

The image below shows immunohistochemical staining of breast cancer specimens as the ischemic time is prolonged. The longer the ischemic time, the less intense the staining of ER and PR. If the staining appears less intense, then the risk of the pathology department reporting a false negative result increases.

Factors to consider when reviewing the literature and interpreting the effects of "prolonged ischemic time."

    1. Specific antibody clone: What clone of antibody was used by the evaluators?

    2. Specimen type: Was the study performed on a lumpectomy specimen or a breast biopsy?

In upcoming posts I will explore how we can prove beyond reasonable doubt that UMKC-GME lied about months of breast cancer care to the ACGME and the implications this has for the women with breast cancer.
