Garcinia Cambogia has become increasingly popular with the weight loss scene. What is it and does it really help with weight loss?
What is Garcinia Cambogia?
Garcinia Cambogia is another name for a popular tropical fruit known as the Malabar Tamarind. The fruit’s rind contains an active ingredient known as hydroxycitric acid or HCA. Some studies have shown that this component can help to boost your ability to burn fat as well as reduce the body’s ability for generating more fat and decreasing your appetite.
The HCA has been shown to block the enzyme that the body uses to create fat, so it should in theory help with weight loss, right?
Does it work?
In the few studies that have been completed using Garcinia cambogia as a weight loss supplement, the patients who took it did lose up to 2 pounds more than the people who did not.
The patients couldn’t determine whether the additional weight loss was due to their new lower calorie diets and exercise regimens or due to the addition of Garcinia cambogia in their diet.
Garcinia cambogia has some other uses as well. A study in mice showed that it has the potential to help diabetic patients. Mice who received the Garcinia cambogia showed lower insulin levels than those who did not, leading some scientists to consider it as a treatment for diabetes.
It can also help to improve cholesterol levels.
It’s hard to say whether Garcinia cambogia actually works for weight loss without better studies to draw information from. That said, there are plenty of other applications for this tropical fruit.
